Universal Studios, Japan, Easter 2024
Hello and welcome back, friends and anime fans, to an exciting special Easter issue of Fantera’s weekly newsletter, your friendly source for all things anime! We’ve filled our basket with some of Anime’s most colorful and well-hidden Easter Eggs, and we’ll be sharing them with you, fellow anime fans! Get ready to brag to your friends with your new secret Anime trivia knowledge!

For anyone who’s never heard of an Easter Egg before, the tradition refers to an Easter activity geared for children known as an “Easter Egg Hunt”, where adults will hide colorful decorated eggs around a home or garden for children to find! They are typically rewarded with sweets or candies for finding the most of these well-hidden decorations! In broader culture, the term ‘Easter Egg’ has come to refer to cleverly hidden messages or images within another piece of art, with examples across all genres of television, video games, movies, and anime!
Artists and creators of all different walks of life share one thing in common— at some point they were inspired by somebody or something else! One of the ways that artists pay tribute to one another is by referencing each-other through their own work!
We’ve searched high and low for some of the coolest examples of these nods and tributes in anime history, and brought them all to you! Prepare to be amazed, and to share these hidden facts with your friends!

Fantera’s Top 3 Anime Easter Eggs of All-Time!
After scouring the archives for all the coolest moments in Anime History to feature an Easter Egg, we’ve boiled (ha) it down to just three, but we encourage you to continue on down the rabbit-hole (ha) on your own!
3. Pulp Fiction Cameos In Kill La Kill
Studio Trigger is famous for making some of the best anime to hit the west, with fan-favorites like Kill La Kill, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Little Witch Academia and Delicious In Dungeon. They have a skillful way of using action and humor to tell a story, much like director Quentin Tarantino, who they have acknowledged as an influence through clever easter-eggs like this one! As Mako and her father zoom down the street in an automobile, the viewer can see them pass Mia, Butch, Vince and Jules from Pulp Fiction!

2. Yoshihiro Togashi References His Wife’s Masterwork Sailor Moon in Hunter X Hunter
As many anime fans are fully aware, the creators of Hunter X Hunter and Sailor Moon are essentially the biggest power couple in the manga industry. Yoshihiro Togashi and Naoko Takeuchi are both highly successful mangaka in their own right, and they have acknowledged each other's work in their own art.
Hunter X Hunter has Sailor Moon showing up as an Easter egg in the most unassuming place: The Zoldyck Mansion. In particular, Alluka is shown playing house with figurines of Usagi and Tuxedo Mask from Sailor Moon. It's a somewhat humanizing moment for a family of otherwise heartless assassins.

1. Naoko Takeuchi Returns Fire With A Hunter X Hunter Easter Egg
Not to be outdone in the sentimental easter egg department by her husband and fellow anime artist Yoshihiro Togashi, Naoko Takeuchi made sure to slip some references to her husband’s art in her work! Like this particular exchange, where Usagi and Ami avoid playing a particular game at the arcade, and it turns out to be a wise decision! Greed Island is a video game in the Hunter X Hunter world that would have perhaps transported them to another world for an entire danger-filled season!

Yuki’s Corner!
Hey fans, Yuki here! I personally love spotting easter eggs, whether I’m watching my favorite anime, playing my favorite games, or reading an exciting new manga! My favorite type of easter egg is the running-gag, the easter egg that keeps on giving! My personal favorite is Pandaman from One Piece! He’s a side-character designed by series creator Eiichiro Oda with a record number of appearances who steals the screen despite never speaking any lines! Pandaman has appeared over 100 times in the Anime, and over 260 times in the Manga! He’s just so cute!
